Compilation of all Dividend Stocks Per Sector for 2014

warning; this post is quite lengthy and includes several stock charts, you may want to bookmark it if you read this on your mobile!

I don’t know if you are like me, but the thing I like the most about managing my own portfolio is buying stocks. The simple fact of adding another company to my investments thinking I will generate profits makes me happy for the day. The second thing I like best is when I sell a stock and cash out the profit. Here again, it’s always fun to look at your paper profit but the best feeling is when you can actually say “I’ve made XX% profit on this trade and the cash is now mine”.

But if managing a portfolio only meant buying and selling stocks whenever we see an opportunity or when it’s time to cash out, portfolio management would be easy. You cant treat your portfolio as a simple series of purchases and sales that pile up throughout the year. It’s important to understand the big picture and look at your portfolio as a whole. Why? Because it doesnt matter if you made money or lost some cash on a specific trade, its the end of the year amount sitting in your portfolio that counts.

The best way I know to manage my portfolio while considering the big picture is using asset allocation. I’ve discussed how to classify your dividend stocks in your asset allocation in a previous post, so I will skip this part and go directly to talk about sector allocation.

My Current Sector Allocation

I’m a guy with a taste for simplicity. I think that when it comes down to portfolio management, the fastest and easiest way to manage your money is usually the best. This is why I don’t try to hold stocks in every sector and tend to concentrate them in just a few of them.

Here’s a breakdown of my current asset allocation (cash aside):

 sector asset allocation

When you look at it, notice that I have 40% in Consumers (cyclical and non-cyclical), 22% in Techno related stocks (including communications), 16% in both Financial and Energy sectors with a 6% in Healthcare (JNJ) which could be included somewhat in the Consumers sector since they produce several consumer products.

I was looking for a main core of companies that I would hold forever (these are Consumers and Financials representing 62% of my portfolio). Then, I wanted to add more upward potential by adding techno stocks and energy. Since both sectors perform well in bullish markets, they are great additions right now.

I strongly believe US banks will be a winner this year so I might add more weight to financials with my next contribution. This is probably where the money will be allocated for now.

Dividend Stocks Compilation Per Sector

The stock market has simplified things for us as they are predefined sectors that are used and recognized by most financial analysts. Today, I simplify things even more with a compilation of all dividend stocks classified per sector. I’ve run filters per sector and included both US and Canadian stocks in the same charts (check the currency column to make sure you look at the right market). Here are the filters I used:

#1 Dividend yield between 2.50% and 7%I wanted to make sure we have interesting dividend stocks

#2 Payout ratio under 80%I wanted to make sure the companies can continue to pay their dividends

#3 Positive Dividend Growth for the past 3 years AND 5 years  – Here again, a good sign the company is in good financial shape

Basic Materials:

If you are looking for dividend-payers, you might forget about basic materials initially. There are only 23 companies fitting the basic dividend requirements. Historically, these companies don’t pay much in dividends since they need their cash flow to invest in new mines and production. They are also highly dependent on the price of the commodities and we remember what happened to the price of Gold last year…

Communications:

The telecoms and internet providers are not too numerous to fit within my criterion. Since their payouts are high even the most known companies in the US (AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ), don’t make the cut for this short list of stocks.  Note that two major Canadian players (Rogers and Telus) are available on the US market (NYSE).

Consumer, Cyclical:

Considering we are in a bull market, investors should look forward to a great year. These companies seem to be able to pick the uptrends in consumer confidence and increase their sales when people’s purses have loosened. There are great stocks to pick from this list.

Consumer, Non-cyclical or Defensive:

Consumer non-cyclical stocks are also called defensive stocks. These companies have the benefit of evolving in markets that is less affected by economic mood swings. We always say that regardless if you keep your job or not, you will brush your teeth in the morning. This is why they are the best stocks to pick from to build a core portfolio. Don’t expect these stocks to sky rocket this year though.

Energy:

The energy sector is not known for high-paying dividend stocks on the US market but still, we were able to find an interesting pick in this category. Considering the rough market for oil sand companies in the past 2 years, Canadian companies are not too present in this chart. However, since commodity prices shouldn’t move too fast this year, it could be interesting to cheat a little bit and broaden your search for Canadian oil companies.

Financials:

I’ve ignored US financials for a while after what happened in 2008. Let’s just say confidence in their balance sheets wasn’t there. However, over the past two years, some companies have shown strengths in their market and it may be time to take a look at them.  You will notice that since this chart is particularly long compared to other sectors. North of the border, Canadian banks are still among the most solid in the world. Having them in your portfolio means having a steady cash distributor with a dividend yield over 4%.

Health Care:

While this is a small dividend sector, I think that almost all companies in this chart are interesting. They show long histories of dividends for the most part and are sitting on billions of investments. There are no surprises as you won’t find any Canadian companies in this chart.

Industrials:

There are a lot of huge companies that are spread around the world in this category (such as MMM and CAT). Defence and Aerospace (LMT & GD for example) offer great dividend yields as well. This could be a very interesting moment to aim for industrial companies as they will probably benefit from the bull market and huge amounts of cash that companies have in their bank accounts to upgrade equipment.

Real Estate:

Real Estate companies are also known as REITs in the investment world. They are quite popular considering their relatively high dividend distributions. In fact, their main goal is to manage Real Estate, cover their fees, and pay out most of their earnings to shareholders. Further analysis is definitely required in this case as you can’t assess a REIT the same way you do with a regular stocks. This is the reason why I’ve taken away the payout ratio as it is completely meaningless when you consider a REIT. However, I was able to find FFO per share (quarterly) which gives you a better indication of how much they can distribute.

Technology:

I really like the technology sector as a relatively new player in the dividend world. Most companies are sitting on billions in cash and this leads to safe and increasing dividend payouts. The only problem with techno stocks is that you have to follow them closely to make sure they are always on the ball. This environment changes rapidly.

Utilities:

This is the realm of steady and high dividend yields. In this sector, it’s not hard to find a 4% dividend stock (there are also a few great 5% stocks too!). The utility sector is known for maintaining dividend payout ratios around 50% (electricity) and 60%-70% (water) and it is also useful to follow these guidelines. This sector will bring stability and push your overall portfolio dividend yield higher. Unfortunately, there are not many utilities stocks in the Canadian market, you have to turn to the US market where you can find plenty. Don’t expect huge growth but for those who are looking for steady dividend payments, utilities are a great place to start.

What are the Best Stocks From Each Sector?

As you can see, I’ve worked pretty hard to narrow down some solid stocks for each sector. However, some charts in this article contain over 20 and even over 50 stocks. This is already way too much work to be done to find the best companies for each sector.

DSR logo

For this reason, I have delved deeper and pulled out the best stocks per sector for 2014. This is a small pdf document that will be available on my new site; Dividend Stocks Rock. Over the past 18 months, I’ve worked very hard on building the ultimate dividend investing platform where you can find the information you need to successfully manage your portfolio on your own and not being overwhelmed by a ton of newsletter and financial information.

If you are curious about what we can do to help you invest, check out my new site!
